A Money Coach in Canada

Well this is a juicy week!

Canada is about to get its first plastic money.

Lululemon’s founder, Chip Wilson (I’ve met him a coupla times. Good guy but I’m so not a Lululemon person. No yummy-mummy, me! But I digress.).. Chip Wilson is now a billionaire

Angry Birds (I’m stuck at level 4-2. Where are you?) developers have raised $42M in seed (ha ha) money.

Public Servants probably need to shell out more from their paycheques to fund their future pensions.

and the UK holds their bank rate to 0.5%

Well I guess it’s not too surprising the Border’s is declaring bankruptcy. The way we read has changed as radically as the way we listen to music. Still, I’m sad to see the demise of anything to do with books.

And of course grim shenanigans in the Canadian Parliament. CIDA unexpectedly denies KAIROS, a respected, ecumenical social justice organisation, $7M in grant money. Except it turns out CIDA didn’t deny it. Bev Oda, our Minister of International Cooperation did. But said she didn’t, which is essentially lying to parliament. The Speaker caller her out. Harper defended her. Nobody’s buying it.

The Canadian Treasury Board and the Dep’t of Finance experienced a serious cyber-attack. Not to worry, the budget is safe.

Marks and Spencers (M&S) ventures back into France. I’m hoping that’s a sign of things to come. I miss them in Canada! (women will know why).

AOL is buying Huffington Post. This makes me a bit anxious. Whenever the original owner doesn’t own the company anymore, things change and rarely for the better.

The owners of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the London (UK) Stock Exchange want to merge, but will Canada let them? It would make the Exchange the largest mining exchange in the world. Here’s BBC’s vid:

Last, my fave story of the week: Beware English Grandmas, you rotten thieves!

Ever shop at SHOPPERS? The CEO of the past 4 years has resigned. There’s no one inside the company ready to step up to the job, so a world wide search will be underway.
My opinion: As more and more provinces start to protest the stranglehold the Pharmaceutical Industry has, and as they start to insist on more access to generic brands and bulk-purchasing (YAY Ontario for taking the lead on this), pitching the job of CEO for Shopper’s is a pretty tough sell. Having said that, I have a vague notion that they make as much from their (gorgeous) makeup and perfume sales as selling prescriptions. On second though, nah, that can’t be true. Can it?

LINKED IN files to go public! (ie. the you’s and me’s of the world can buy stock in their company if it goes through) and hell yes, I’d invest! (per usual: don’t mistake me for a financial planner, or construe this advice! I’m just sharing my personal take here.)

NETFLIX is freaking out (as well all should probably be) about Bell and Roger’s evil plan to start charging us by-the-gig-consumed for internet usage as well as giving a generous amount and capping it. Apparently a lot of Canadians were stung when they started using Netflix, not realizing they were exceeding their allotted bandwidth as they watched movies. Ouch.

oh, and: Sarah is going to pay off $15,000 in Student Loans this year! Pop by her blog and wish her luck!

The Canadian gov’t is making it tougher to buy condos. Apparently Flaherty is doing this to save us from ourselves. I don’t yet know what to make of this. In any case, here’s a good article that shows how it will affect our purchasing power.

Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) is taking medical leave again. But Apple followed that news up by announcing their revenue was up 70% compared to last year. w00t! If I may be so bold: I bought shares when they were just over $200. Check out Apple’s current stock price.

Wendy’s is going to sell off Arby’s. (any readers old enough to remember Where’s The Beef?)

…and your favourite consumer products are the same price, but 20% smaller. That’s one way to hide inflation, I suppose…
