Lame Title, but the question remains:

Is Apple Care worth it?

I have always understood that buying insurance on tech items was for suckers.  However, I have often heard that Apple Care is actually a good deal.

Most recently, I heard it on Leo Laporte’s MacBreak Weekly.

(I think it was Scott who buys it with each apple product).

You know what?  I’m not ashamed of it (although my mac may spontaneously combust.  Wait, no, that was dell…):  I Love the Microsoft Advert.

That Bill Gates is willing to be so relaxedly goofy (sort of like the cast in MamaMia!) completely impressed me.  Yeah, this first advert doesn’t get into product itself.   So what.  It’s taking the “evil empire” label and letting us see the human being – who, lest we forget, did as much as anyone to bring everyday computing into our lives.

Note too it’s gentle feel – in contrast to the increasingly aggressive Switch campaign.

Ha!  Derek K. Miller had the eye to spot this one -  Old Navy has a new clothing line that has absolutely nothing to do with the olympics.  Check it out for yourself!

It’s back to school time! Just some fun reminders of the basics of getting deals:

1.  Freecycle has loads of stuff For FREE.   For example, on the back-to-school theme, just this weekend there were

  • 2 working printers being offered
  • 2 desks (1 was Ikea)
  • and a telescope.

2. Craigslist freestuff yielded

  • a couple cases of BOOST shakes (think: 1st year university)
  • a Heintzman upright piano (anyone starting piano lessons?  Heintzmans are typically very good pianos – I have one!)
  •  and a free Winnebago if you can’t afford student housing (or you could live in Main Library at UBC like one dude when I was there).

3.  But if really, really what you want to do is  take a course on Lego Robotics from M.I.T., well you can do that too, for free.

Readers: any good freebies/deals that you know of coming up?  Esp. relating to back-to-school?

See this?  See this gas-guzzlin’ boat of a 1959 Lincoln Continental Mk 4?

This, my friends, is getting an extreme make-over by rocker Neil Young.

Neil has concluded that “Just singing a song won’t change the world“so he and hottie Jonathan Goodwin, an eco-mechanic in Witchita (sic) have teamed up to transform the 10 mile per gallon beast into an electric car, called the LincVolt.

This is more than just a rock-star project.  Young doesn’t hesitate to point out that if they pull this off, it’s something GM could mass produce.  In fact, that’s the whole point:  to “RePower the American Dream“.   By linking green technology with USA classic (not to mention, when it’s not running on electricity, it now gets 100 miles per gallon), this could propel smart cars miles ahead in public acceptance.

Readers:  what do you think?  Will people be more inclined to go green on vehicles if they don’t look like, well, squashed and tinny machines?
