I’m a capitalist, no question, but this seems just wrong.

I’ve said it before, and I’m guessing I’ll say it again, but with a lot of condos sitting empty either on speculation or because the int’l owners use it as their pied-a-terre this seems.just.wrong. Hollyburn properties? This smells rotten.
Score one for the ‘owning is better’ camp. When people are arguing about how fantastic renting is they tend to ignore that this can happen at any time.
If the market prices for a certain product go up, why is it wrong to ask the buyers to pay this price?
If the price of bread, or gas was 30% lower 5 years ago, should I expect to pay the same today?
How is it fair to me that if I want to rent an apartment in the WE I have to pay 50% more than the couple in the video, effectively subsidizing them?
Yes, this type of thing rips communities apart. I grew up in Vancouver and most of my old friends have left. I often listen to people complain about Vancouver — people who have moved here from somewhere else, most often Ontario. They complain about the lack of community . . . I find it so ironic that there is some sort of expectation that a city this young that has grown so quickly should be anything like places in Ontario that have been established for a hundred or more years longer than Vancouver. If I feel this way I can’t imagine what our aboriginal neighbours feel.
